Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. Good oral hygiene practices and preventative therapy are essential in keeping your gums healthy.Request Appointment
Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, which include the gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone.
Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. Plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.
Plaque hardens into tartar, and the gums can begin to recede from the teeth. Pockets form between the gums and teeth and become filled with bacteria and pus. The gums become inflamed, and bleed easily. Slight to moderate bone loss may be present.
The teeth lose more support as the gums, bone, and periodontal ligament continue to deteriorate. Without treated, the affected teeth may become loose and or even lost. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.
